Nice stein! First of all, you don't mention or show any manufacturer's marks, so it was more than likely made in Germany about 1885 give or take a couple of years. These large pieces were generally used for display and over the years have accumulated a coating of tobacco tar. If you want clean it do not use anything abrasive on it. Simply spray the entire stein with 409 kitchen cleaner and the tobacco crud will all disolve and wash away. What ever is left is natural toning (patina) and you don't want to destroy that. Some people have other means of cleaning, but the 409 is the quickest and the safest for the pewter. I,ve used it for as long as it has been on the market and it has NEVER damaged the pewter.
