On Saturday, 21st
January, a beautiful winter day, the Desert Steiners met at OHSO Eatery and Brewery
in Phoenix, Arizona.
We were pleased with the
turn-out which included Terri Sanders, the wife of our speaker and also Dick
and Justine Heckroth and Gary and Betty Criswell from the Pacific Stein Sammler
who were visiting Arizona. As always, we
welcome winter visitors, so Terri, the Hackroths and Criswells, we say come
back soon!
After an hour or so talking
about steins on display
and those “that got away” we settled down to an
eclectic lunch off the OHSO menu.
After lunch, our President Joe Heater started the business meeting, asking Erik
Sanders for his treasurer’s report – we are quite solvent. Next Joe talked-up the S.C.I. Convention in Annapolis, Maryland next summer.
This was followed by a new member initiative presentation by Al and Eric
Pabst. Several excellent ideas were put
forth and commitments to implement were made.
A report on the results will be given at our spring meeting on 21st
April, in Tucson.
Next, Brian Sanders, a member
of the
Thoroughbred Stein Verein who lives in the Indianapolis area, gave us a most interesting PowerPoint
presentation entitled The Kaiser’s Last Hussar Regiment. Brian’s presentation included photos of very
rare regimental beer steins and uniforms of the Royal Saxon 3rd
Hussar Regiment No. 20, which was garrisoned at Bautzen in Saxony. It was a most
interesting talk. Brian is the father of
our treasurer Erik Sanders and is an internationally known expert on German
cavalry collectables.
